Jonathan Dayton was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1760 and became a politician involved in the nation's founding. At age 26, he signed the Constitution of the United States, making him the youngest signer. He served in the House of Representatives beginning in 1791 and held the position of Speaker from 1795 to 1799 before moving to the Senate for one term. In 1807, he was arrested on suspicion of treason related to Aaron Burr's scheme to establish an independent territory in the Southwest and parts of Mexico; a grand jury cleared him, though his political career did not resume at the national level.
