Joseph Albert Walker was born on February 20, 1921, in Washington, Pennsylvania. He worked as a test pilot, physicist, and astronaut, and was the first person to fly an airplane to space. Walker was one of twelve pilots who flew the North American X-15, an experimental spaceplane jointly operated by the Air Force and NASA. He died on June 8, 1966.
