Biography
Joseph Cornell was born in Nyack, New York, on December 24, 1903, and died on December 29, 1972. He worked as a painter, sculptor, filmmaker, textile artist, and draftsperson. Largely self-taught, he developed a style that incorporated cast-off and discarded artifacts, and he made experimental films alongside his visual art. For most of his life he remained in his home, where he cared for his mother and disabled brother, while maintaining contact with other artists of his time.
