Biography
Joseph Jenkins Roberts was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1809. He emigrated to Liberia in 1829, where he established a trading firm in Monrovia. Roberts served as governor of Liberia from 1841 to 1848, then as president from 1848 to 1856 and again from 1872 to 1876. He died in 1876.
