Joseph Raymond McCarthy was born in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, and served as a Republican senator from Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957. Beginning in 1950, he alleged that communists, Soviet spies, and sympathizers had infiltrated the federal government, military, universities, and the film industry. The Senate censured him in 1954 for refusing to cooperate with and abusing members of the committee investigating whether censure was warranted. The term "McCarthyism," coined in 1950, was applied to similar anti-communist activities and later used to describe demagogic and unsubstantiated accusations.
