Joseph Samuel Nye Jr., born in South Orange, New Jersey in 1937, was an American political scientist, philosopher, and geopolitical analyst. Together with Robert Keohane, he developed the international relations theory of neoliberalism, published in their 1977 book Power and Interdependence, and formulated the concepts of asymmetrical and complex interdependence. He developed the theory of soft power, and his concept of "smart power" was adopted by members of the Clinton and Obama administrations.
