American molecular biologist (1925–2008)
Biography
Joshua Lederberg was born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1925 and worked as a molecular biologist, microbiologist, geneticist, and computer scientist. At age 33, he won the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering that bacteria can mate and exchange genes, a discovery made alongside his wife Esther, who remained uncredited for her contributions. He shared the prize with Edward Tatum and George Beadle. Lederberg died in 2008.
