Biography

Jubal Early was born in Franklin County, Virginia in 1816 and died in 1894. A lawyer, politician, and military officer, he attended the United States Military Academy and served in the United States Army before resigning after the Second Seminole War to practice law and engage in politics. He resigned his Virginia military commission following the Mexican–American War for the same reasons. When the American Civil War began, he accepted a Confederate military commission and fought in the Eastern Theater, commanding a division under Stonewall Jackson and Richard S. Ewell before later commanding a corps.
