Biography

Julia Gardiner Tyler was born on May 4, 1820, on Long Island, New York. She became first lady of the United States on June 26, 1844, serving in that role until March 4, 1845, as the second wife of President John Tyler. Tyler and the widowed president married in secret following the death of her father David Gardiner; they had met in 1842. She died on July 10, 1889.
