Biography

Julius Axelrod was born in New York City in 1912 and worked as a biochemist and neuroscientist. He shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Bernard Katz and Ulf von Euler for his research on the release and reuptake of catecholamine neurotransmitters, which include epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. He also contributed to understanding the pineal gland and its role in the sleep-wake cycle. He died in 2004.
