He worked as a photographer and cinematographer from the 1900s through the 1950s, contributing to films including F. W. Murnau's Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator and Limelight, and the television series Broken Arrow. He photographed 19 episodes of My Friend Flicka and worked on 3-D films.
