Leonard Bloomfield was born in Chicago on April 1, 1887, and died on April 18, 1949. He worked as a linguist and pedagogue, leading the development of structural linguistics in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. His 1933 textbook Language offered a comprehensive account of American structural linguistics. He contributed to Indo-European historical linguistics, the study of Austronesian languages, and the description of Algonquian languages.
