Leontyne Price, born in Laurel, Mississippi in 1927, is an American opera singer. She was the first African-American soprano to achieve international acclaim. Beginning in 1961, she maintained a long association with the Metropolitan Opera, becoming the first Black singer to sustain an ongoing relationship with the company. She performed regularly at major opera houses including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and La Scala, and was particularly known for singing the title role in Giuseppe Verdi's Aida.
