Biography

Letitia Christian Tyler was born in New Kent County, Virginia, in 1790. She married John Tyler in 1813, after the two met in 1808. While Tyler held political office at the state and federal level, she managed their Virginia plantation and accompanied him during his time as governor of Virginia. A stroke in 1839 left her permanently disabled. She served as first lady of the United States from 1841 until her death in 1842.
