Lewis Roberts Binford was an American archaeologist and anthropologist who worked in archaeological theory, ethnoarchaeology, and the Paleolithic period. He introduced processual archaeology in the 1960s, a development that prompted much of the theoretical work in archaeology during the late 1980s and 1990s, whether in support of or opposition to this approach. Born in November 1931 in Virginia, Binford died in April 2011.
