Biography

Lionel Hampton was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1908 and died in 2002. A vibraphonist, percussionist, and bandleader, he performed with jazz musicians including Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992 he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and he received the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
