Biography

Lucy Webb Hayes was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1831 and served as the 19th first lady of the United States from 1877 to 1881 during her husband Rutherford B. Hayes's presidency. She had previously served as First Lady of Ohio during two separate periods when her husband was governor, from 1868 to 1872 and again from 1876 to 1877. Opposed to alcohol, she did not serve it in the White House. She died in 1889 at age 57, following a stroke.
