Biography

Lyman Spitzer was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1914 and died in 1997. He worked as a theoretical physicist, astronomer, and mountaineer. His scientific research focused on star formation and plasma physics, and in 1946 he proposed the concept of telescopes in outer space. He invented the stellarator plasma device and was the namesake of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. As a mountaineer, he made the first ascent of Mount Thor alongside Donald C. Morton.
