Biography

Madalyn Murray O'Hair was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1919 and worked as a journalist, lawyer, and writer. She founded American Atheists in 1963 and served as its president until 1986, when her son Jon Garth Murray took over the role. She created the first issues of American Atheist Magazine and supported atheism, separation of church and state, and feminism. She died in 1995.
