Biography

Mario Lanza was an American tenor and actor born in Philadelphia in 1921. He began formal vocal training at age 16, and after performing at the Hollywood Bowl in 1947, he signed a seven-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In 1948 he sang the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly in New Orleans. He was a film and recording star during the late 1940s and 1950s until his death in 1959.
