Marshall Warren Nirenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927 and died in 2010. A biochemist and geneticist, he shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Har Gobind Khorana and Robert W. Holley for work on the genetic code and its role in protein synthesis. That same year he received the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University, which he shared with Khorana.
