Martin Gardner was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1914 and died in 2010. He wrote on popular mathematics and popular science, with interests spanning magic, scientific skepticism, philosophy, religion, and literature, particularly the works of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, and G. K. Chesterton. His most successful book, The Annotated Alice, combined the text of Carroll's two Alice novels and sold over a million copies. MAGIC magazine included him among the "100 Most Influential Magicians of the Twentieth Century" in 1999, and he published more than 100 books across his career.
