Biography

Mary Agnes Chase was born in Iroquois County, Illinois in 1869 and became an American botanist specializing in agrostology. Beginning as an illustrator at the United States Department of Agriculture under Albert Spear Hitchcock, she advanced to senior botanist and oversaw the USDA's Systematic Agrostology department despite having no formal education beyond elementary school. Chase conducted fieldwork in Europe and South America, and authored several books including The First Book of Grasses: The Structure of Grasses Explained for Beginners, which was translated into Spanish and Portuguese. She participated in demonstrations organized by the Silent Sentinels, a group formed by members of the National Woman's Party, in support of women's suffrage, and received a Certificate of Merit from the Botanical Society of America in 1956 before her death in 1963.
