Biography

Matthew Ridgway was born in Hampton, Virginia in 1895 and died in 1993. He served as an army officer, holding the position of Supreme Allied Commander Europe from 1952 to 1953 and Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. During World War II, he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in operations in Sicily, Italy and Normandy, and later commanded XVIII Airborne Corps from August 1944 until mid-1945, including in the Battle of the Bulge, Operation Varsity and the Western Allied invasion of Germany.
