Biography

Maureen Connolly was born in San Diego on September 17, 1934, and became a tennis player who won nine major singles titles in the early 1950s. She achieved the first Grand Slam win by a woman in 1953 and remains the only player to win a title without dropping a set across all four major championships. A horseback riding accident in July 1954 caused serious injury to her right leg and ended her competitive career at age 19. She died on June 21, 1969.
