Biography
Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1928 to Polish-Jewish parents. He worked as an author and illustrator of children's books, creating pictures for his own works and for books by other authors, including the Little Bear series by Else Holmelund Minarik. He wrote and illustrated Where the Wild Things Are in 1963, followed by In the Night Kitchen in 1970 and Outside Over There in 1981. Sendak also designed sets for operas, among them Mozart's The Magic Flute. He died in 2012.
