Biography

Michael P. Anderson was born on December 25, 1959, in Plattsburgh, New York. He served as a United States Air Force officer, physicist, and astronaut, holding the rank of lieutenant colonel. On the Space Shuttle Columbia's final mission, he served as payload commander overseeing science experiments. He and six crew members were killed on February 1, 2003, when Columbia disintegrated during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
