Milton Friedman was born on July 31, 1912, in Brooklyn, New York, and died on November 16, 2006. He worked as an economist, statistician, and essayist, and received the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and the complexity of stabilization policy. Friedman was among the intellectual leaders of the Chicago school of economics alongside George Stigler, a neoclassical school that opposed Keynesianism in favor of monetarism and later new classical macroeconomics. Several economists mentored or recruited by Friedman at Chicago became Nobel laureates themselves, including Gary Becker, Robert Fogel, and Robert Lucas Jr.
