Biography

Moses I. Finley was born in New York City in 1912 and died in 1986. An American-born classical scholar and historian of classical antiquity, he was prosecuted by the United States Senate Subcommittee on Internal Security during the 1950s, after which he relocated to England. In England he became master of Darwin College, Cambridge. He published The Ancient Economy in 1973, arguing that ancient economies were governed by status and civic ideology rather than rational economic motivations.
