Biography
Murray Gell-Mann was born in Lower Manhattan in 1929 and died in 2019. A theoretical physicist, he introduced the concept of quarks as fundamental constituents of strongly interacting particles and developed the renormalization group as an element of quantum field theory and statistical mechanics. He received the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the classification of elementary particles and their interactions.
