Biography

Nunnally Johnson was born on December 5, 1897, in Columbus, Georgia. He worked as a screenwriter, film director, producer, and playwright, writing screenplays for more than fifty films between 1927 and 1967, and producing and directing many of them. In 1940 he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Grapes of Wrath, and in 1956 he was nominated for a Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing for The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. As a playwright, he wrote books for several Broadway musicals and plays. He died on March 25, 1977.
