Octavia E. Butler was born in Pasadena, California in 1947 and worked as a science fiction writer and novelist. She won Hugo, Locus, and Nebula awards for her works. In 1995, Butler received a MacArthur Fellowship, becoming the first science-fiction writer to do so. She died on February 24, 2006.
