She made her film debut in 1939 and appeared in The Fallen Sparrow, Dressed to Kill with Basil Rathbone, and the screen adaptation of The Song of Bernadette. On Broadway, she played the lead role in the original production of Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate and later in The King and I.
