Paul Volcker was born in Cape May, New Jersey in 1927 and died in 2019. An economist and banker, he served as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1975 to 1979, then as the 12th chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987. During his time as chairman, he implemented measures known as the Volcker shock to address high inflation levels in the United States throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
