Peter Lamborn Wilson

American political writer, poet, and essayist (1945–2022)

Peter Lamborn Wilson was born in New York City in 1945 and worked as a philosopher, translator, historian, poet, and cultural studies scholar. During the 1970s he lived in the Middle East and worked at the Imperial Iranian Academy of Philosophy under Seyyed Hossein Nasr, where he studied Sufism, mysticism, and Persian literature. Beginning in the 1980s, he wrote political and countercultural texts under the pen name Hakim Bey, developing concepts including ontological anarchy and poetic terrorism. His writing circulated through small presses, zine networks, anarchist circles, radio, rave culture, and academic discussions of post-anarchism and cyberculture before his death in 2022.
