Philander C. Knox was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania in 1853 and died in 1921. A lawyer, politician, and diplomat, he served as the 44th U.S. attorney general under William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt from 1901 to 1904, and as the 40th U.S. secretary of state under William Howard Taft from 1909 to 1913. He represented Pennsylvania in the United States Senate during two periods: from 1904 to 1909 and from 1917 to 1921.
