Biography

Philip Showalter Hench was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1896 and worked as a physician, endocrinologist, and physiologist. He received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1950, shared with Edward Calvin Kendall and Tadeus Reichstein, for discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects, and for the application of cortisone to treating rheumatoid arthritis. He died in 1965.
