Ralph Metcalfe was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 29, 1910, and died on October 10, 1978. He competed as a sprinter in track and field, jointly holding the world record in the 100-meter dash. At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics he placed second in the 100 meters to Eddie Tolan, and at the 1936 Berlin Olympics he finished second to Jesse Owens in the same event. He won four Olympic medals across his athletic career and was regarded as the world's fastest human in 1934 and 1935. Later in life he worked as a politician.
