Biography

Ray Barbuti was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1905 and died in 1988. An American football player and sprint runner, he won two gold medals at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, first in the 400 meter sprint and then in the 4 × 400 meter relay as the anchor runner. He had initially traveled to compete only in the 400 meter event, but after his victory Major General Douglas MacArthur, the US Olympic committee president, insisted he also run in the relay the following day.
