Biography

Raymond Thornton Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888 and worked as an oil company executive before turning to detective fiction writing in 1932 at age 44, following job loss during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot," appeared in Black Mask magazine in 1933, and his debut novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. He wrote seven novels during his lifetime, all but Playback adapted into films, some multiple times. He died in 1959.
