Biography

Richard Henry Lee was born on January 20, 1732, at Stratford Hall, Virginia, and died on June 19, 1794. A statesman, politician, and judge from Virginia, he introduced the Lee Resolution to the Second Continental Congress in June 1776, which called for the colonies to separate from Great Britain and led to the Declaration of Independence, which he signed. He served as president of the Continental Congress for one year, signed both the Continental Association and the Articles of Confederation, and represented Virginia as a United States senator from 1789 to 1792, during which time he held the office of second president pro tempore of the Senate.
