Biography

Richard Paul Kiley was born in Chicago on March 31, 1922, and worked as a stage, film, and television actor and singer. He won two Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical and created the role of Don Quixote in the 1965 Broadway production of Man of La Mancha, becoming the first to sing and record "The Impossible Dream." Earlier, he performed as the Caliph in the original Broadway cast of the 1953 musical Kismet and sang "And This Is My Beloved" as part of the quartet. Over five decades he earned four Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, and his baritone voice was heard in narrations for documentaries and films. He died on March 5, 1999.
