Richard Mentor Johnson was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 17, 1780, and died on November 19, 1850. A lawyer and jurist, he served as the ninth vice president of the United States from 1837 to 1841 under President Martin Van Buren, and was the only vice president elected by the United States Senate under the Twelfth Amendment. He represented Kentucky in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, and served in the Kentucky House of Representatives at the beginning and end of his political career.
