Richard Walden Yates was born in Yonkers, New York in 1926 and worked as a novelist, journalist, and screenwriter. His debut novel, Revolutionary Road, was a finalist for the 1962 National Book Award, and his first short story collection, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, drew comparisons to James Joyce. Though his work received critical recognition, it did not achieve commercial success during his lifetime. He died in 1992.
