Robert Alphonso Taft Sr., born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1889, was a lawyer and politician who served in the United States Senate representing Ohio from 1939 until his death in 1953. A Republican, he held the position of Senate majority leader and was part of the conservative coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats that opposed the expansion of the New Deal. He co-sponsored the Taft–Hartley Act of 1947, which prohibited closed shops and established the framework for right-to-work states while imposing additional restrictions on labor unions and practices.
