Biography

Robert Anderson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1805 and became a United States Army officer who served as a major general. He commanded Union forces at Fort Sumter when Confederates bombarded the fort in April 1861, leading to its surrender and the start of the Civil War. Following this, he was promoted to brigadier general and assigned to command Union forces in Kentucky, though he was removed from this post late in 1861 and reassigned to Rhode Island. He retired from military service in 1863 and returned to Fort Sumter in 1865 to raise the American flag. Anderson died in 1871.
