Biography
Robert Duvall was born in San Diego in 1931 and worked as an actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, director, and producer. He began performing on stage in 1952 at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport on Long Island, continuing until 1959 with an interruption for service in the U.S. Army. His early theater work led to television roles in the 1960s on shows including The Defenders, Playhouse 90, and Armstrong Circle Theatre, followed by a Broadway debut in Wait Until Dark in 1966. In 1977 he appeared in David Mamet's American Buffalo, receiving a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Play.
