Biography

Robert Franklyn Overmyer was born in Lorain, Ohio in 1936 and worked as a test pilot, naval aviator, aeronautical engineer, physicist, and United States Marine Corps officer. Selected by the Air Force as an astronaut for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory in 1966, he transitioned to NASA following the program's cancellation in 1969 and provided support crew duties for the Apollo program, Skylab program, and Apollo–Soyuz Test Project. He piloted STS-5 in 1982 and commanded STS-51-B in 1985 as part of the Space Shuttle program, and served as a lead investigator into the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986 before retiring from NASA that year. Overmyer died in 1996 while testing a homebuilt aircraft.
