Robert Hanssen was born in Chicago in 1944 and worked as an FBI agent while simultaneously engaging in espionage for Soviet and Russian intelligence services between 1979 and 2001. The United States Department of Justice characterized his espionage as "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history." He died in 2023.
