Robert J. Walker was born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania in 1801 and died in 1869. He worked as a lawyer and economist while serving as a Democratic politician, including a tenure in the U.S. Senate representing Mississippi from 1835 to 1845, as Secretary of the Treasury under President James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849, and as Territorial Governor of Kansas in 1857. He drafted the 1849 bill that led to the creation of the United States Department of the Interior.
